President and Chief Executive Officer

Ian L. Edwards was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SNC-Lavalin on October 31, 2019. On June 11, 2019, he was named Interim President and CEO and became a member of its Board of Directors. He has over 30 years of global experience in delivering complex infrastructure and resources projects and leading businesses in many sectors and across numerous geographies including North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

As President and CEO, he is responsible for reviewing the strategic direction of the Company on an expedited basis and in developing a plan for sustainable success that de-risks and simplifies the company’s business model and generates consistent earnings and cash flow.

Before being appointed to his current role, Mr. Edwards was named Chief Operating Officer (COO) in January 2019 where he has taken the lead in executing the initiative to simplify, focus, and grow the business and implemented numerous measures to improve the operational performance of the company, ensuring that the efficiency and project oversight measures are being successfully executed.

Mr. Edwards joined SNC-Lavalin in 2014 and was later appointed President, Infrastructure in 2015. As President, Infrastructure, he led employees within SNC-Lavalin’s global Infrastructure business and oversaw the successful turnaround and transformation of the sector.

Prior to joining SNC-Lavalin, he spent six years in senior roles with the Leighton Group, where as Managing Director, Leighton Asia, India and Offshore, he led a diverse business of 20,000 employees spanning the construction, infrastructure, oil and gas and mining sectors in 14 countries.

Mr. Edwards holds Higher and Ordinary Certificates in Civil Engineering from Lancashire University in the United Kingdom. He is an incorporated Member of the Chartered Institute of Building, a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.

Robert (Bob) E. Alger?

President, Infrastructure Projects

Robert (Bob) E. Alger joined SNC-Lavalin as President, Infrastructure Projects on August 25th, 2020.  

Prior to joining SNC-Lavalin, Mr. Alger spent almost four decades with The Lane Construction Corporation, rising through the ranks of the US-based organization until his appointment as President and Chief Executive officer in 2001. Under his leadership, Lane Construction became a national leader in the industry with yearly revenues increasing nearly six-fold during his tenure to over US$2 billion. He was also instrumental in helping the company expand its footprint from essentially a regional player in the American North-East to one with a national presence across the US.

He is also a leader in the construction industry. He helped found the Construction Industry Ethics and Compliance Initiative (CIECI) and Construction Industry Safety Initiative (CISI) group, which promotes Safety Week annually across the US. Mr. Alger has also served as President of The Moles and The Beavers organizations, Chairman of the Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT), President of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Construction Institute, and First Vice Chairman of the ARTBA.

Mr. Alger has had the honour of receiving several recognitions throughout his professional career. In 2013, he was awarded the Outstanding Project and Leadership (OPAL) Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Moles Award for Outstanding Achievement in Construction in 2011, and the Outstanding Engineering Alumni Award from Penn State’s College of Engineering in 2006.

Mr. Alger holds a B.S. Civil Engineering, Pennsylvania State University.

Jeff Bell joined SNC-Lavalin on February 11, 2020 as Executive Vice-President and was appointed as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) on April 14, 2020. 

Prior to joining SNC-Lavalin, Mr. Bell was Group Chief Financial Officer at Centrica Plc, a UK FTSE listed energy services and solutions company. He joined Centrica’s Direct Energy business in Toronto in 2002 where he held various senior finance positions before moving to the head office in the UK in 2008. Mr. Bell held the positions of Executive Assistant to the CEO and Head of Group Strategy, and Director of Corporate Finance & Group Financial Controller before being appointed CFO in 2014. Mr. Bell previously worked for The Boston Consulting Group and KPMG in Canada. 

Mr. Bell is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, CA), has a BA in Accounting from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

James Cullens is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company’s Human Resources activities globally. He has over 25 years of international experience in human resources roles. Mr. Cullens joined SNC-Lavalin in 2017, when the company acquired WS Atkins plc where he was Group Director, Human Resources & Marcomms and Executive Director.

Before joining WS Atkins plc, he was Group HR Director at Hays plc, a global professional services company. Prior to this, Mr. Cullens was Group HR Director at The BOC Group plc, a leading industrial gas producer, and subsequently Group HR Director at Linde AG, a multinational chemical company, when the two businesses merged. He also served as Head of Global Human Resources at PA Consulting Group, and spent his early career in Human Resources-related roles with Mars Incorporated, Asda, The Albert Fisher Group and Whitehead Mann. He has lived and worked in Hong Kong, New Zealand and the former Soviet Union.

Mr. Cullens has held non-executive board roles at African Oxygen Limited and at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in the UK, and is currently a member of the International Advisory Board of The Open University Business School.

Mr. Cullens is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and holds a Master of Arts (Hons) from Cambridge University as well as a Master of Letters, a Master of Science in Human Resources (Hons) and a Bachelor of Science.

Philip Hoare

President, Atkins, Engineering, Design & Project Management

Philip Hoare is President of Atkins, SNC-Lavalin’s Engineering, Design & Project Management sector. He is responsible for the company’s infrastructure engineering and design services around the world. He is a member of the Executive Committee of SNC-Lavalin. 

Philip joined SNC-Lavalin following the 2017 Atkins acquisition, but has been with Atkins since 1997. He has held several senior positions, including leading the transportation division as well as operations across Europe.
 
He is committed to collaborating with clients and partners to deliver their objectives today and to face the future, taking full advantage of digital transformation to improve the efficiency and productivity of infrastructure delivery through best-in-class capabilities in engineering, design and project management. He is passionate about the skills agenda and celebrating diversity and inclusion, as well as a strong advocate of STEM and early career development. He is the senior leadership sponsor for our Women’s Professional Network and the sponsor for the Diversity & Inclusion program in the UK and Europe.

Philip is a highly respected leader in the UK market having worked on behalf of the UK Government and the industry to develop a new Sector Deal for rail as part of the government’s Industrial Strategy. Philip has also held a number of positions across the industry including roles on the Boards of the Railway Industry Association, the Rail Supply Group, the Defence Growth Partnership and the National College of High Speed Rail. He has also held positions as the Chair of the Highways Term Maintenance Association and as a Non-Executive Director of the Rail Safety and Standards Board.

A chartered civil engineer by profession, Philip is a member of both the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation.

President, Resources

Craig Muir is President of SNC-Lavalin’s global Resources sector, with 21,500 employees and activities around the world.

Mr. Muir joined SNC-Lavalin in April 2019, reporting directly to Ian L. Edwards, Chief Operating Officer, and is part of the Executive Committee. Based in the United Arab Emirates, he leads the company’s global Resources sector, including oil and gas, and mining and metallurgy markets, with a focus on business development and client execution and delivery.

With over 30 years of experience in the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry, Mr. Muir is a seasoned executive with world-class expertise in managing a large-revenue, high-growth engineering business, as well as extensive project experience at some of the world’s leading consultancies. He has worked in many international locations from the UK to the Middle East, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Far East.

Mr. Muir comes to SNC-Lavalin from Petrofac where he was the group’s Chief Commercial Officer and a member of their Executive Committee. He was responsible for the leadership, management and delivery of major projects, deployment of effective operations and development of medium and large businesses into new service sectors and geographies. Prior to his commercial role, he headed up Petrofac’s Engineering and Consulting Services business, where he was accountable for the delivery, performance, strategic growth and development of all reimbursable services.

He also spent seven years with AMEC, recently as their Executive Vice President for the Middle East, Africa and CIS. His early career was spent with KBR, Brown & Root and AOC.

Mr. Muir has an MBA from the University of Strathclyde and background in Mechanical and Production Engineering.

Charlene Ripley is the Executive Vice-President and General Counsel at SNC-Lavalin, where she leads both the Company’s legal and integrity teams.

From April 2013 to April 2019, Ms. Ripley was Executive Vice President, General Counsel at Goldcorp Inc., a multi-national senior gold mining company, where she led the Legal, Ethics and Compliance, and People teams, as well as risk functions including Internal Audit, Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance. 

Prior to Goldcorp, Ms. Ripley served as SVP, General Counsel at Linn Energy (Houston) and as VP General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Chief Compliance Officer at Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Houston). Throughout a career that has spanned three decades, Ms. Ripley has also led enterprise functions including information technology, corporate affairs, and government relations, as well as supporting several multi-million and billion dollar growth transactions. 

Ms. Ripley also serves as an independent director on the Board of Keyera Corp. (TSX:KEY) and is also a member of Keyera’s Compensation and Governance and the Health, Safety and Environment Board Committees.  She is also a member and former Chair of the BC and Yukon Provincial Board for the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.

In 2018, she was honoured with the Business in Vancouver’s “Influential Women in Business Award” and in 2017, she received the Lexpert Zenith Award Celebrating Women in Law. She was named 2015 Western Canada General Counsel of the Year and received the BC Business 50 Most Influential Women award the same year. In 2015 and 2016 she was recognized with the WXN Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award.

Ms. Ripley holds a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, from the University of Alberta and earned her law degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a member of The Law Society of British Columbia, The Law Society of Alberta, Texas State Bar and Canadian Bar Association.

Erik J. Ryan is SNC-Lavalin’s Executive Vice-President, Strategy, Marketing and External Relations. Mr. Ryan is responsible for SNC-Lavalin’s strategic planning, corporate marketing, corporate communications, government and aboriginal affairs, and mergers and acquisitions.

Mr. Ryan, a Quebec native, was previously Senior Vice-President Communications and External Relations at Rio Tinto Alcan, where he was in charge of the group’s global reputation management and stakeholder engagement strategy. Mr. Ryan joined Rio Tinto Alcan in 2002 in the Strategic Management Support team and then held positions of increasing responsibility, most notably in mergers and acquisitions, strategy and government negotiations.

Prior to this, Mr. Ryan worked with the Boston-based Monitor Group in the area of global strategic consulting. He has over 25 years of experience in various aspects of corporate external relations, including contract negotiations, business development, community relations, and strategy development and execution. Mr. Ryan holds a Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University and an MBA from Harvard University. He also sits on several Canadian non-profit boards and has chaired many, such as the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal and the Quebec Manufacturers and Exporters Association.

Alexander (Sandy) Taylor

President, Nuclear

Alexander (Sandy) Taylor is President of SNC-Lavalin’s global Nuclear sector, which provides deep expertise across the entire nuclear life cycle including reactor new build support and consultancy, operations and maintenance, life extension, decommissioning and waste management in the company’s many geographies, as well as other non-power related nuclear solutions. Mr. Taylor’s oversight includes the design and delivery of CANDU? reactors, the development of advanced fuel technologies for implementation in international markets and small modular reactor (SMR) support.

Prior to this role, Mr. Taylor was President of SNC-Lavalin’s former Power sector which comprised nuclear as well as hydropower, renewables, conventional power, and transmission & distribution.

Mr. Taylor joined SNC-Lavalin in 2014 after 29 years with ABB. He held a number of senior roles including Senior Group Vice-President of the Global Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals business unit, and President and CEO of ABB Canada. His expertise spans various engineering sectors, with an excellent track record in power projects and in providing services to industrial and utility clients around the world.

Mr. Taylor began his career at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL) in 1979, where he contributed to the successful start-up and operation of various CANDU sites.

Mr. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering from Queen's University and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Wajax Corporation.

Stéphanie Vaillancourt is Executive Vice-President, Capital, and Treasurer of SNC-Lavalin. As Executive Vice-President, Capital, she is responsible for investing capital in projects, including major projects, managing SNC-Lavalin’s multi-billion-dollar portfolio of infrastructure investments across the world, and bidding as a financing partner on large public-private projects. In her role of Treasurer, Ms. Vaillancourt oversees the Treasury, Insurance and Corporate Procurement divisions of the company.

Prior to joining SNC-Lavalin in October 2016, Ms. Vaillancourt held a number of key positions in large organizations. She joined SNC-Lavalin from Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) where she was Treasurer. She has more than 20 years of experience in Treasury, Risk Management and Corporate Finance, which includes positions at Hydro-Québec and GE Capital Canada.

Ms. Vaillancourt obtained a M.Sc. in Finance from HEC Montreal and holds the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Certified General Accountant (CGA) designation.

Louis G. Véronneau is Executive Vice-President and Chief Transformation Officer at SNC-Lavalin. He joined the Company in February 2020, reporting directly to Ian L. Edwards, President and Chief Executive Officer and is part of the Executive Committee. Based in Montreal, he is responsible for streamlining the Company’s operations, processes and Information Technology (IT) Systems, in support of the new strategic direction.

Mr. Véronneau’s experience spans 25 years as a securities lawyer, general counsel, investment banker and executive responsible for Strategy, Corporate Development and similar functions across several industries.

He initially practised securities law at a Canadian law firm before joining a natural-resource company operating across North America, Europe and Asia, first as General Counsel and then as head of Strategy and Corporate Development. He later became a Managing Director, Investment Banking at one of Canada’s largest banks, before joining a global train-and-aircraft-manufacturer to spearhead a series of transformative transactions aimed at de-risking and streamlining the company’s focus.

Mr. Véronneau is a graduate of the University of Montreal and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He serves on the Board of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and was commissioned as an Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Nigel W.M. White is Executive Vice-President, Project Oversight at SNC-Lavalin. He joined the Company in August 2019, reporting directly to Ian L. Edwards, Interim President and Chief Executive Officer, and is part of the Executive Committee. Based in London, United Kingdom (UK), he leads the newly created Project Oversight function that ensures delivery and execution across all the Company’s operational sectors. 

Mr. White has over 30 years of experience in managing all aspects of civil, building, foundation, electrical and mechanical contracts in Hong Kong, UK and USA. Prior to joining SNC-Lavalin, he was Executive Director at Gammon Construction Limited in Hong Kong where he had responsibility for the company’s operations together with financial performance responsibilities, business growth strategy and business development. 

He also spent over 20 years at Balfour Beatty in a variety of increasingly senior positions including Commercial Manager responsible for various projects. His early career was spent with Bucknall Austin and Partners – Chartered Quantity Surveyors and George Stubbings Limited, both in the UK. 

Mr. White holds a Bachelor of Science Degree, Quantity Surveying, from the Birmingham City University and is Fellow of the chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Member of the Royal Institute of Surveyors.
